RTE and a few perspectives

The RTE has got past the Lok Sabha as well. What does this signify for India as a nation ? What can we expect as a result of this historic step ?

First, the policy makers deserve a short but sure appreciation for having gone past this stage. Unfortunately, there is no excuse for the same guys who could have done this about five years ago when they were in power. So, along with the credit of doing it this time, the discredit of having imposed a disastrous Education Minister and his regime on the nation belongs squarely on the same team.

Sainath, IIT and Mallya

I Ran into P Sainath, the outstanding ‘The Hindu’ journalist at the Mumbai airport. He was taking a flight to Kolhapur and I am sure this would be one more among the hundreds of visits he has put to these areas that have been his research backyards on the subject of drought, poor farmer’s plights and so on over the past years.  Quite unlike myself, I walked up to him, greeted and shared my appreciation for the extra-ordinarily dedicated work of passion that he is doing as a researcher-journalist.  What a role model in this era of ‘stenographic’ journalism !!
The only other journalist that I have met and admired her for the competency led and old values driven journalism is Mythili Bhusnurmath.

Education gets sexier. But, we need Jehadis

Madhav Chavan (Pratham), Parth Shah (CCS), Shantanu Prakash (Educomp), Rajendra Pawar (NIIT), Shaheen Mistry (Akanksha)  are some of the edu-entrepreneurs who have given years of their lives to education. While Shantanu or Rajan are the mainstream corporate entrepreneurs, Madhav and Shaheen have committed their lives to making a difference at the lower echelons of the socio-economic pyramid even as Parth toils away at policy-entrepreneurship.  To me, however, each one has been an outstanding entrepreneur who has added value to the field of education. Needless to say….there are over a few more hundred such people whom I have not been able to name here.
